aerobic respiration & ATP

Cards (6)

  • what does respiration do?
respiration releases the chemical energy stored in glucose through a series of enzyme controlled reactions
  • what are the uses of ATP?
    1 - muscle cell contraction
    2 - cell division
    3 - protein synthesis
    4 - transmission nerve impulses
  • where does aerobic respiration start?
    in the cytoplasm
  • why does aerobic respiration occur?
    because oxygen is present
  • stage one of aerobic respiration
Glucose is broken down to TWO MOLECULES of pyruvate in the cytoplasm & Oxygen is not required.
  • stage 2 of aerobic respiration
each pyruvate is broken down to carbon dioxide and water releasing ENOUGH ENERGY to produce a LARGE NUMBER OF ATP. If oxygen is present AEROBIC RESPIRATION takes place in the MITOCHONDRIA. Then carbon dioxide + water is produced.
