Cell Division by Mitosis

• both plant and animal cells have a nucleus
• in a nucleus we find chromosomes that are made of dna
• body cells contain pairs of chromosomes
• human body cells contain 23 pairs of chromosomes
• gametes have chromosomes that arent paired
• chromosome carry 100s of genes that determine our features
• animals and plants have soo many cells so they have to be able to divide for the cell cycle
• cells can divide by either mitosis or miosis
• first stage of mitosis

  dna replicates forming two copies of each chromosome still attached to eachother

  the cell grows and copies the rest of its internal structures such as mitochondria and ribosomes
• second stage of cellcycle

  mitosis takes place and one set of chromosomes is pulled to each side of the cell, dividing the nucleus.

  the cytoplasm and the cell membrane divide to form two identical cells

  • essential for growth and development of multicellular organisms like animals and plants
