osmosis is the diffusion of water from a dilute solution to concentrated solution through a partially permeable membrane
dilute solutions have a high concentration water
in concentrated solution contain a low conc. of water
partially permeable membranes let some molecule pass through but not all of them
placing an animal cell in water
the cytoplasm of cells have a relatively low conc. water as they are already concentrated solutions, so if we place the cells in water osmosis will take place where water will move in the cell causing the cell to expand and maybe burst
placing an animal cell in a concentrated solution
water will move out the cell through osmosis causing it to shrink
placing a plant cell in water
water will move into into the cell causing it to expand but the cell wall will prevent it from bursting but it will still swell which is called a turgid cell
placing a plant cell in a concentrated solution
water moves out from the cell through osmosis causing it to shrink making the cell flacid
