  • anaemia can be caused by iron deficiency
  • iron is needed to make red blood cells - these cells carry oxygen from the lungs and travel in your blood around the body to where it is needed
  • people with anaemia have a reduced amount of red blood cells
  • causes of anaemia:
    • not eating enough iron-rich foods eg red meat and dark green leafy vegetables
    • losing iron through periods or during pregnancy
  • health problems associated with anaemia:
    • tiredness
    • pale complexion
    • heart palpitations
    • headaches
    • abnormal fingernails
