  • Scotland Act 1998 created Scottish parliament
  • They use AMS - Additional Members System, Scotland is divided into 73 constituencies each represented by MSP (FPTP). And then divided into 8 regions represented by 7 MSPs elected with party list.
  • SNP has the majority 63 MSPs, Scottish conservative & unionist party 31 MSPs, Scottish Labour 22 MSPs and Scottish Green Party 7 MSPS.
  • It has various powers, local government, economic development, education, health, justice, policing & courts, transport and some welfare powers.
  • Hate crime & public order Bill, updates existing laws and pulls laws into one bill as well as adding to protected groups.
  • Gender Recognition Reform bill: Legislation making it easier for people to change their legally-recognised sex was passed by the Scottish Parliament in 2022. The legislation received cross-party support in Holyrood, passing by 86 votes to 39 after a highly-charged debate.
  • Gender Recognition Reform bill: concerns that many people have” and ascertain whether the bill had “ramifications” for U.K.-wide law. Westminster would, Jack warned, block the act “if necessary.” Section 35 — part of the original settlement devolving power from Westminster to Scotland. This allows the U.K. government to veto devolved legislation that infringes on wider British law.
