    • Heart failure may be the consequence of a failing left or right ventricle or both ventricles
    • so heart failure is the result of an inadequate left, right or bilateral pump which occurs in series with the pulmonary and systemic circulation
    • an inadequately functioning ventricle leads to:
    • hyper-perfusion - congestion of the preceding system
    • as well as
    • hypo-perfusion of the succeeding system
    • for the right ventricle, majority of symptoms will be arising from
    • the systemic venous circulation (preceding system)
    • the pulmonary system (succeeding system)
    • for the left ventricle, majority of symptoms will be from
    • the lungs (preceding system)
    • the systemic arterial system (succeeding system)
    • left ventricular failure in time will cause right ventricular failure
    • right ventricular failure in time will cause left ventricular failure
    • prognosis is poor
    • total heart failure includes failure of both ventricles
