Parasitology

• Parasites are any organisms that lives in or on the body of another organism
• Habitat- any organisms that harbors the parasites
• Ectoparasites- outside the body of the host
• Ectoparasites = infestation
• Endoparasites- lives within the body of the host
• Endoparasites = infection
• Pathogenic- produce disease pattern in man
• Non-pathogenic - does not produce any diseasein man (commensals)

• Facultative- parasites that lives in a free-living state
• Intermittent parasites- they only visit host during their feeding time
• Soil transmitted parasites- they developed further in the soil before they become infective
• Snail transmitted parasites- developed further in the body of a snail
• Biological vector- transmits the parasites from one host to another within the
• Mechanical vector- transmit the parasites from one host to another but there's no development
• Definitive host- aka final host. It harbors the adult or the secual stages of the parasites
• Intermediate host- harbors the asexual/larval stages of the parasites
• Reservoir- host that allows the parasites to complete its life cycle and become an additional source for human infection
• Paratenic- host wherein the parasites does not develop or multiply
• Oral - ingestion of infective stage and intimate oral contact
