Emotivism

• Emotivism is an ethical theory which says that moral statements are just expressions of feelings or emotions.
• It is a non-cognitive and anti-realist theory.
• Moral statements are meaningless as they cannot be verified.
• Two main philosophers are A.J. Ayer and David Hume.
• "Values cannot be derived from fact." David Hume
• Hume says that moral judgements are emotional responses to the external world.
• A.J. Ayer was influenced by David Hume are they said that moral values and judgements are not based on sense or experience and do not correspond to any physical properties in the world, therefore they are neither true or false.
