type of experiments

Cards (4)

  • What is a pilot study?
A small-scale trial run of a study to test any aspects of the design, with the view of making improvements
  • why is a pilot study used?
    • to find out whether certain aspects of the design do/don't work
    • to see what variables need to be controlled
    • can see what needs to be adjusted without having invested as much time and money as a full scale study
  • true or false? The results of a pilot study are relevant
FALSE- not relevant as the researcher is only seeing what needs improving
  • evaluate the different types of experiments
    LAB-
    • 😊high internal validity- high control
    • 😊easily replicated- high external validity
    • ☹️materials lack mundane realism
    • ☹️pps know they are being studied- demand characteristics
    NATURAL-
    • 😊allows research where IV can't be manipulated for ethical/practical reasons
    • 😊psychologists can study real problems
    • ☹️less control over extraneous/confounding variables
    • ☹️time consuming = expensive
    FIELD-
    • 😊high ecological validity
    • 😊pps not aware of being studied, no demand characteristics
    • ☹️less control over variables
    • ☹️time consuming and expensive
    QUASI-
    • 😊allows comparisons between type of people
    • ☹️pps could be aware- demand characteristics
    • ☹️DV may be artificial, low mundane realism
