  • Juliet's cousin who is seen as a very aggressive and hegemonic, masculine character.
  • He cares a lot about his family honour and if he feels attacked or disrespected he is prepared to fight. Shakespeare uses Tybalt's character to show how destructive honour can be if it taken to the extremes.
  • Represents familial love as he is willing to go to all lengths to protect his family. Although he is portrayed as aggressive, the nurse calls him an "honest gentleman" and "the best friend I had" and she, Juliet and Lady Capulet seemed sad about his death.
  • "...talk of peace! I hate the word, As I hate hell, all Montagues, and thee.”

This suggests he is one of the main catalysts for the feud in the play. He has such a hatred for the Montagues and could never overcome the feud. Religious imagery makes the hatred seem so much more violent as it is compared to hell.
