proactive interference

  • What is proactive interference?
Things we already know can cause problems when we try to remember new information. E.g., trying to learn your new phone number
  • What research supports proactive interference?
Baddeley and Hitch (1970): Asked rugby players to recall the names of teams they recently played, recall of the most recent game was equally good regardless of how long ago it was. This supports proactive interference as it shows that incorrect recall was not due to decay, but was related to the number of intervening games.
