  • One reason why Black and Hispanic Americans have suffered from poverty is because of discrimination. Black Americans and Hispanics have suffered systematic and long-term discrimination and have faced barriers to progress, and they have subsequently fallen victim to the poverty cycle. This means that they have limited access to employment opportunities and lower wages that can affect subsequent generations and the opportunities people have later in life. For example, Black people make 76 cents to white people’s dollar
  • Another reason why Black and Hispanic Americans have suffered from poverty is because they are more likely to work lower paid jobs. Different ethnic groups are concentrated in different fields of employment. White people are concentrated more in professional and managerial occupations whilst Black & Hispanic people are more likely to work in lower paying jobs such as retail, construction, farming, cleaning, catering etc. For example, in 2023 White households had a median income of $89,050, compared to the median incomes of Hispanic ($65,540) and Black ($56,490) households
  • Black and Hispanic Americans have access to lower quality education or can’t attend higher education due to poverty. This means that Black and Hispanic people have limited access to higher status jobs that offer higher wages. For example, Black and Hispanic students have higher High School drop out rates.
