Geography (water)

Cards (17)

  • As water vapor rises, it cools and condenses into water droplets. Clouds are formed.
  • The water cycle is the continuous movement of water between the Earth's surface, atmosphere, and oceans.
  • Water in the oceans, rivers and lakes is heated and evaporates.
  • When water droplets become to heavy, they fall as precipitation.
  • Some precipitation is caught by plants before reaching the ground. This is called interception.
  • Water in plants turns into water vapor through transpiration.
  • Some precipatation flows on the ground surfaces as surface runoff.
  • Some precipitation infiltrates into the soil and becomes groundwater. This is called infiltration.
  • A river basin also called a drainage basin, is the area of land drained by a river and its tributaries. It is made up of different parts.
  • Parts of a river basin: Main stream, a stream that flows directly into the sea.
  • River source: the starting point of a river.
  • Tributary: a stream that flows into a larger stream or the main river.
  • Watershed: an area of high ground or a ridge that seperates two neighbouring river basins.
  • River mouth: the place where the main river enters the sea.
  • The Amozon Basin is the largest basin in the world.
  • Water resources refer to the freshwater that is avaliable for human use. Freshwater is scarce.
  • Freshwater makes up of 3% of the Earth's water. 0.3% surface water which are 2% rivers, 11% swamps and 87% lakes.
