  • Symbolic codes - what something represents.
  • Written codes - the language used, printed or spoken.
  • Technical codes are specific to the type of media being created. In film, these include lighting techniques, camera movement, and audio techniques.
  • Symbolic codes are not a part of the media product, but of culture and experience. They are about what something represents, symbolises or means. Examples are body language and colour.
  • Written codes apply to a written text or dialogue.
  • Mise-en-scene refers to everything the camera sees.
  • Transitions connect two different shots together, created in post-production.
