  • What is the Respiratory system?

    The respiratory system is the organ system responsible for the exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the body and the environment.
  • What are all the labels of the respiratory system?
    Larynx, Right main bronchus, Right lung, Left lung, Pharynx, Trachea, Left main Bronchus, Diaphragm and ribs.
  • What does Gaseous exchange mean?
    Gaseous exchange occurs at the alveoli in the lungs and takes place by diffusion. The alveoli are surrounded by capillaries, so oxygen and carbon dioxide diffuse between the air in the alveoli and the capillaries.
  • Tidal volume?

    Is the amount of air breathed in with each normal breath. The average tidal volume is 0.5 litres (500 ml)
  • inhalation occurs when the intercostal muscles contract causing the ribcage to expand and the diaphragm contracts pushing downwards
  • Inspiratory Reserve Volume?
    Is the maximum amount of additional air that can be taken into the lungs after a normal breath.
  • Expiratory Reserve Volume?
    The maximum amount of air that can be forcefully exhaled after a normal exhalation.
  • Residual Volume?
    The volume of air remaining in the lungs after maximum exhalation.
  • Aerobic?
    Exercise with oxygen.
  • Anaerobic?
    Exercise without oxygen.
