  • Rural change:
    • People are leaving remote rural areas (depopulation) such as the Outer Hebrides
    • Services are closing in some rural areas - e.g post offices and bus transport impacting the elderly in particular
  • Impacts of commuting:
    • Towns and cities are closely linked to surrounding rural areas
    • As there is a decline in jobs in rural areas, many commuter settlements have been developed
    • This has lead to house prices increasing, increased traffic and a loss of community
  • Population movement:
    • 2007-2012 UK cities were losing people to elsewhere in the UK, such as Manchester
    • Coastal cities gained in population
    • Regional inequalities - fewer jobs in Northern areas and more education opportunities in the South
  • Consequences of international migration:
    1. Urban - housing prices and spending in local shops increased, higher demand for translators, more EAL students
    2. Rural - similar to urban, but consequences can be harder to reduce due to limited funding and remote location
  • Online Shopping:
Social impacts: People have access to a wider range of goods, the elderly may not be able to access the internet
Environmental impacts: Fewer cars, some delivery services have high carbon footprint
Economic impacts: Less money is spent locally - higher vacancy rates, unemployment, reduction in local economy
  • Impacts of major sporting events on localities:
Direct employment - Jobs are created within a business (e.g ticket sales)
Indirect employment - Jobs that come as a result of investment by a business (e.g taxi drivers, hotel staff)
