Topic 3 - Mixtures & Separation

Cards (17)

  • Different kinds of mixture: suspension, colloid, solution
  • Suspension= solid particles spread out through the mixture without dissolving e.g. muddy water
  • Colloid = mixture that looks cloudy or opaque e.g. milk. Particles of solids are smaller
  • Solution: the solids break up into such small pieces that you can't see them, the mixture is transparent
  • Soluble: Substances that can be dissolved in solvents.
  • Solute: A substance that is dissolved in a solvent.
  • Solvent: A liquid that can dissolve a substance.
  • Some gases can dissolve in water
  • Concentration: the amount of solute dissolved in a solvent
  • Saturated: when no more solute can dissolve in a solvent
  • What is filtering used for?
to seperate solids from a suspension
  • What is evaporation used for?
to seperate solids from a solution or colloid
  • What is distillation used for?
    Separating liquids from mixtures.
  • What is chromatography used for?
to separate individual solutes from a mixture of solutes in a solvent
  • What is a yellow bunsen flame?
    safety flame
  • What does a medium blue bunsen flame mean?
    gentle heating
  • What does a blue bunsen flame mean?
    rapid heating
