Evaluation of interference theory

Cards (2)

  • What is a strength of the interference theory of forgetting?
Most of the evidence supporting this theory comes from lab studies, e.g., Underwood and Postman. This is a strength as extraneous variables can be controlled and these experiments can be replicated so reliability can be tested.
  • What is a weakness of the interference theory of forgetting?
They use artificial material (lab studies). This is a weakness as they are meaningless to the participants so they do not represent everyday life situations. However, some studies do support for the influence of interference in everyday life, e.g., Baddeley and Hitch.
