What is eye witness testimony?

Cards (3)

  • What is EWT?
The ability of people to remember the details of events which they themselves have observed.
  • What are schemas in memory?
Our memory capacity prevents us from remembering precise details about our everyday lives, but schemas allow us to summarise the regularities in our lives. There is a cost to this, in that we may mistakenly 'recall' events that never really happened, because they make sense within a particular schema.
  • What did Gabbert et al do in 2003?
They studied participants in pairs and made them both watch two different videos. One video had no sound, and the other video had sound but was from a different angle. This meant that each participant could see things the other could not. Both participants discussed with each other what happened before independently completing a test of recall. 71% of participants recalled aspects they didn't see, but picked up in discussion.
