  • Pure substances?
Made up of only one type of particle, each pure substance has a unique set of physical characteristics, can be divided into elements and compounds.
  • Mixtures?
    • made of 2 or more pure substances
    • Divided into 4 different categories
  • What are the 4 categories that mixtures can be put into?
    • mechanical mixture
    • solutions
    • suspensions
    • colloids
  • Pure substances can be divided into two groups, what are they?
    elements and compounds
  • What are the characteristics of an element?
    • found on the periodic table
    • Made of one type of atom
    • cannot be broken into smaller particles
  • what is a compound?
    • combination of 2 or more elements in a fixes ratio
    • all the particles are the same but the atoms can be different
    • Energy can be used to separate the compound into their elements
  • What are the characteristics of a solution?
    • Made up of two or more types of particles
    • Looks like one substance
    • Particles are evenly spread out evenly
  • What is a mechanical mixture?
Particles are not evenly spread out and more than one particle is visible. Ex trail mix
  • Suspension: The components are in different states and cannot be easily separated. Ex mud in water
  • What are the characteristic of a colloid?
The particles are evenly dispersed and do not settle
    Cannot be separated by filtration
    Ex milk
  • What are the characteristics of a homogenous mixture?
    Particles look the same throughout
  • What are the characteristics of a heterogenous mixture?
    The particles look different throughout
  • What is a physical property?
A property that can be observes without forming a new substance
  • What are some examples of physical properties?
Colour, texture, smell crystal shape and density
  • What are physical properties?
Malleability, ductility, melting and boiling points, viscosity and solubility
  • What are chemial properties?
When a substance reacts with another when forming a new substance
  • what are examples of chemical properties?
reaction with acids, combustibility, reaction with water, reaction to heat, toxicity
  • When matter changes to a solid liquid or gas what kind of change is that?
    physical change
  • what is a physical change?
When a substance changes form and not but not compositon
  • What changes when a chemical change happens?
    A new substance is formed
  • What are some examples that can tell of a chemical change is going on?
change in colour ,odor, a change in temperature, formation of a gas and a precipitate.
  • What is the law of conservation of mass?
States that mass is not lost nor gain during and chemical reaction
