  • IP resisted going onto reservation for as long as possible - as long as their was buffalo to hunt
  • treaties gave IP right's to huge hunting area's outside their reservations
  • once the buffalo was gone, the clause in the treaty that gave the Ip the right to hunt outside their reservation was gone - without their main food source, the IP needed to learn how to farm and assimilate
  • the IP had to rely on food from the government to survive after the buffalo was gone
  • the government could force them to do anything by not sending them food - this got the IP to comply with what ever they wanted
  • the extinction of the plains opened the plains up for cattle ranching - cattle ranchers had powerful friends in the government
