• Software refers to a set of instructions that tell the computer what to do
• There are two types of software: Application software (Apps) and System Software
• Preinstalled Software includes OS and Apps that are free or Trial Base Software
• Installed Software is software you buy, which can be Proprietary or Free software (Open Source)
• Productivity Software includes Word processing, Spreadsheet, Presentation, Database, and Personal Information Manager (PIM)
• Spreadsheet Software performs calculations and numerical analyses. Examples include Microsoft Excel, Apple iWork Numbers, and OpenOffice Calc
• Word Processing Software is used to create and edit documents like research papers, class notes, and résumés. Examples include Microsoft Word and Apple iWork
• Database Software is used to store and organize data in fields, records, and tables. Examples include MS Office Access and Oracle Database
• Presentation Software is for multimedia presentations. Examples are Microsoft Office PowerPoint, Apple iWork Keynote, Google Slides, and Prezi
• Personal Information Manager Software helps manage e-mail, contacts, calendars, and tasks. Examples are MS Outlook, Yahoo!, and Google-Gmail
• Multimedia & Entertainment Software includes Digital Image/Video editing Software, Digital Audio Editing Software, Game Creation Software, and Educational Software
• Small Business Software includes Accounting software like Intuit QuickBooks, Desktop publishing (DTP) software like Microsoft Publisher and Adobe InDesign, and Web page-Authoring software like Microsoft Expression Web and Adobe Dreamweaver
• Digital Image Editing software is used for editing photos, and examples are Adobe Photoshop and Corel Paint shop pro
• Digital Audio Editing software is for creating and recording audio, such as Audacity
• Digital Video Editing software is for editing videos, like Adobe Premiere Pro and Apple’s Final Cut Pro
• Understanding System Software: Real-Time Operating Systems are used for machinery with minimal user interaction, like car engines and medical devices
• Game Creation Software is used to create characters, tournaments, and layouts, like Roblox Studio and Game Maker
• Educational Software includes Course Management software for online classes, like Abacus and Moodle
• Operating Systems for Mobile Devices include Android, IOS, Windows mobile, and Blackberry, designed for smartphones, tablets, gaming systems, and personal media players
• Top three operating systems for Personal Computers are Windows, Mac OS X, and Linux
• Operating Systems for Networks, Servers, and Mainframes include UNIX, a multiuser, multitasking operating system
• The Operating System coordinates and directs the flow of data and information through the computer system
• The User Interface enables users to interact with the computer through Command-driven, Menu-driven, or Graphical user interfaces (GUI)
• The Boot Process loads the operating system into RAM to start the computer
• File Management involves naming files with two parts: Name and Extension, and determining file location by its file path
• Utility Programs include Firewall, file-compression utilities, Antivirus, security programs, and standalone utility programs like Freeware
