  • Ducks phase model of relationship breakdown: Dispositional and situational factors contribute in the gradual breakdown of a relationship process. The partner reaches a threshold and the perception changes becoming dissatisfied. 4 phases come after this; intra-psychic, dyadic, social phase and grave dressing.
  • Intra-psychic - One individual begins to feel dissatisfied and mulls over their thoughts privately and weigh up pros and cons of the relationship against allternatives.
  • Dyadic phase: There a a series of confrontations when they cannot avoid talking about the relationship further. Determination to continue breaking it or try repair it. "I would be justified in leaving".
  • Social phase: Involves couple's social networks and the break up is made public. Mutual friends find they have to pick a side. ie. close friends are told and gossip.
  • Grave dressing phase: Moving on and tidying up memories. "Time to get a new life".
