  • Weber believed religion is a force of social change and used the religious belief of Calvinism as an example of how religion can and has brought social change
  • Calvinism: What does predestination mean?
    God had predetermined which sould would be saved and which would not, even before birth. Nothing can be done to change this selection whether through their deeds or faith
  • Calvinism: What is divine transcendence?
    God is so far above and beyond this world, no human could possibly understand or claim to know his will. This resulted in Calvinists feeling an unprecedented inner loneliness. And combined with predestination, it created a salvation panic- they did not know whether they would be saved and could not do anything to earn salvation

    Calvinists lived disciplined, hardworking lives but avoided luxury. They believed wealth was a sign of God's favour, so instead of spending it, they reinvested it—helping capitalism grow.
