Surplus and deficit

  • In the northern hemisphere, winds are deflected to the right due to the Coriolis effect. This is caused the spinning of the earth. Atmospheric cells move warm air form the equator to higher lattitudes and cold air from the poles to lower lattitudes
  • There are three atmospheric cells resposible for the movement of air. The Hadley cell and polar cell are thermally direct, and the farrel cell is thermally indirect
  • At the hadley cell, warm air rises at the equator creating low preasure. Air splits in the atmosphere and moves down towards the poles. At the tropics, the air starts to cool and sinks creating high preasure. The North East trade winds move air back to the equator completing the hadley cell.
  • At the polar cell, cold air sinks which creates high preasure. The polar easterlies move cold air from the poles towards the equator. The cold air meets warmer air from the tropics causeing the air to rise. SOme of this air moves back towards the poles, completing the Polar cell.
  • The Farrel cell is located at 30 and 60 degrees north. The farrel cell tranfers air between the hadley and polar cell forming the westerlies
