  • Henry and Anne's relationship:
    -Henry was confident Anne would have more children after Elizabeth in 1533
    -she had a miscarriage in 1534
    -Henry fell from his horse in 1536 and was unconscious for 2 hours
    -made him scared he would die without a son
    -Henry reasoned that God disapproved of his marriage
    -Henry fell for Jane Seymour
  • Anne's suspected adultery:
    -by spring 1536 a rumour that Anne was being unfaithful reached Henry
    -in April he asked Cromwell to investigate
    -30th April court musician Mark Smeaton arrested and tortured into confessing an affair with Anne
    -also aressted Sir Henry Norris and Anne's brother George but they denied charges
    -Anne charged with 5 cases of adultery and treason but protested her innocence
  • the role of cromwell:
    -Cromwell had already looked into if Anne had a former relationship with Henry Percy, meaning her marriage to King Henry would be invalid but there was no concrete evidence
    -took a leading role in building the adultery case against Anne
    -he made sure Anne's lady's in waiting were spies reporting back to him
    -Cromwell and Anne disagreed on foreign policy and what to do with the money from the dissolution of the monasteries
  • Anne's downfall:
    -arrested on 2 May 1536
    -15 May she was tried jointly with her brother
    -found guilty and sentenced to death
    -17 May the Archbishop of Canterbury annulled their marriage
    -Elizabeth was made illegitimate
    -19 May Anne was executed in front of 1000 people
  • Jane Seymour:
    -Day after Anne's death, Henry asked Jane Seymour to marry him
    -she was gentle and kind
    -their wedding was on 30 May 1536 and it was small and private
    -she gave birth to Edward on 12 October 1537
    -Jane died less than 2 weeks later from childbirth
    -Henry wore black for 3 months
