conformity so social roles

Cards (5)

  • Zimbardo- 1971- procedure- random allocation to role of prisoner or guard, was realistic as the prisoners condition were arrested at their homes and treated like prisoners eg stripped and given a number as well as being given their prisoner clothes, stanford uni basement of psych department was a fake prison, ethical issues- protection from psych harm, abusive guards, the experimenter may have encouraged abusive behaviour as well,
  • another drawback of Zimbardo research- individual differences- the sample was 24 men who had volunteered for a prison study, later research shows that people who volunteer for studies are more likely to have an authoritarian personality
  • zimbardo found that both prisoners and guards quickly identified with their social roles, guards became increasingly abusive and despite being instructed to not use physical abuse they used other means instead
  • ethical issues with the stanford prison experiment 1971- lack of informed consent as the behaviour of the guards towards the prisoners could not be foreseen, and therefore the consent given was not what actually ensued.
  • ethical issues of zimbardo= pps also did not consent to being arrested at their own homes, zimbardo did not also protect the participants from psychological harm, only within one day stress symptoms started to show
