river and oceeans

Cards (20)

  • tidal waves are caused by the gravitational pull of the moon and sun on the earths oceans
  • ocean waves affected by?
water depth, amount of energy from winds & storms & shape of shoreline
  • ocean waves: when deposited, are sorted and layered
  • sediments reach beach by?
weathering/erosion of cliffs nearby, washing onto beaches by waves, deposition into oceans by streams
  • ocean waves: what happens b/c erosion?
beach drift due to longshore current: waves strike at an angle and water near shore is pushed in one direction, sediments are carried same directon causing beach to shift over time
  • what is a sand bar?
build up of sand that points like a finger showing the direction the waves are traveling
  • what is a barrier island?
long narrow strip of sand forming island that protects inland from waves and storms
  • what is a jetty?
wall built to protect entrance to harbor from wave erosion or storms and accelerated deposition. slows water and sand on the side water is coming form, causing deposition
  • what is a groin?
a 90 degree wall to beach (L) to protect beaches from sand erosion by wind/water, accelerates deposition (on side where water is coming from)
  • running water is the most important agent of erosion b/c soil and rock carried with/by water
  • what is a divide?
high point that separates drainage basins
  • top/ head of river = steeper and faster
  • mouth/end of river = gentler and slower
  • what is discharge?
volume of water passing a certain point in a given amount of time
  • greater discharge = greater velocity
  • lower discharge = lower velocity
  • older stream = greater discharge
  • younger stream = less discharge
  • late winter to mid summer = more discharge
  • late summer to mid winter = less discharge
