Developmental Studies

• Development studies, according to the Ateneo de Manila University, it is a “distinct field of multidisciplinary study, research, and policy analysis directed at understanding the processes and imperatives of national, regional, community, and global transformation”.
• Development - UN General Assembly (1997): “a multidimensional undertaking to achieve a higher quality of life for all people”
• Development - UN Development Programme (1990): “process of enlarging people’s choices… [that leads to] a long and healthy life, to be educated and to enjoy a decent standard of living.”
• Compared to community development, development studies studies systems on a macro-level approach, i.e., national, regional, community, and global transformation. Community in this sense refers to the macro-level communities, particularly the trans-national communities such as the Overseas Filipino Workers, Filipino-Americans, etc.
