Active Transport

Cards (5)

  • Grade 9 Definition = Active Transport is the movement of molecules or ions against a concentration gradient. (from an area of low concentration to an area of high concentration) It uses energy from respiration (in mitochondria, using oxygen) and carrier proteins.
  • When the solute binds to its transporter it changes shape so that it can move across the membrane
  • Carrier protein bind to the solute to be transported.
  • The binding causes a conformational change in the carrier protein which allows the solute to cross the membrane.
  • The protein returns to it original position ready for another solute molecule
