Homeostasis

Cards (7)

  • Homeostasis is the maintenance of a constant internal environment in order to maintain optimum conditions for enzyme activity and cellular function.
  • Conditions maintained by homeostasis:
    • Blood glucose concentration
    • Body Temperature
    • Water levels
  • Nervous and chemical responses are used in body control systems
  • All control systems have:
    • receptors
    • Coordination centres
    • Effectors
  • Receptors detect changes in the environment (stimuli)
  • Coordination centres obtain and process information from receptors
  • Effectors (muscles or gland) bring about responses to stimuli
