Separating mixtures

Cards (6)

  • A mixture is 2 or more elements or compounds that are not chemically combined together.
  • Filtration (e.g sand +water) due to the sand being insoluble you are able to separate it using filter paper which only water can get through.
  • Evaporation: the process of turning from liquid into vapour. (e.g salt + water) You heat up salt and water , eventually the water will turn into vapour just leaving the salt behind.
  • Distillation- 2 liquids which have different boiling points.
  • Chromatography: a technique for the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension through a medium in which the components move at different rates.(e.g inks)
  • rf value= distance moved by colour/ distance moved by solvent
