  • News of arrest of Indian nationalist leaders in the Sikh holy city sparked riot
  • British and Indian troops under the command of Brigadier General Reginald Dyer were sent to restore order
    Dyer banned all public meetings- would be dispersed by force
  • Thousands of unarmed protestors gathered in walled garden area near to the Golden Temple- sacred Sikhs place of worship
  • Dyer marched a force of 90 Gurkha and Indian soldiers into the enclosure and opened fire for 10-15 minutes on the crowed trapped in the enclosure
  • 379 killed and 1200 wounded
  • Dyer was forced to resign from his role in Indian as a consequence
