• Ribosomes are responsible for protein synthesis
• The nucleus is the control centre of the cell, containing DNA which controls all activities within the cell.
• Chloroplasts contain chlorophyll to absorb light energy during photosynthesis
• Vacuoles store water, waste products or pigments
• Mitochondria produce energy through aerobic respiration
• The cell membrane controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell
• The cell wall protects the cell
• The cytoplasm is the site of chemical reactions and is where most of the cell's chemical reactions take place
• Cell division allows cells to divide and grow
• Animal cells do not have chloroplasts, a cell wall or a permanent vacuole
• Plant cells contain chloroplasts which are responsible for photosynthesis
• A plant cell has a large central vacuole that contains water and dissolved minerals
• Root hair cells are specialised because they have a large surface area to absorb water and minerals
• Sperm cells are specialised because they can swim through the female reproductive system to fertilise an egg
• Muscle cells are specialised because they have lots of mitochondria to provide energy for contraction
