• Case scenario:

  • 15 year old CF female admitted with an infective exacerbation
  • Mum reports not compliant with home physio or nebs
  • Lost weight recently
  • Does no exercise
  • Increased cough with dark brown sputum last 2 weeks
  • Worsening shortness of breath on exertion
• Case scenario:

  • Auscultation – coarse crackles both upper lobes
  • Chest Xray – consolidation right upper lobe
  • SaO2 89% on room air
  • RR 14
• Case scenario - problems:

  • sputum retention
  • decreased exercise tolerance
  • lack of understanding - educational need
• Case scenario - physiotherapy treatment plan:

  1. apply oxygen therapy first - humidify the oxygen
  2. obtain sputum sample
  3. airway clearance technique
  4. education about home airways clearance regimen - offer choice of techniques
  5. increase exercise tolerance in hospital
  6. education about regular exercise programme at home
  7. refer to paediatric clinical psychologist
  8. refer to dietician
