    • In June 1992, at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, more than 178 countries adopted Agenda 21 for sustainable development
    • Millennium Summit in September 2000 led to the elaboration of eight Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to reduce extreme poverty by 2015
    • World Summit on Sustainable Development in 2002 reaffirmed commitments to poverty eradication and the environment
    • United Nations Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) in June 2012 led to the establishment of the UN High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development
    • In 2013, the General Assembly set up a 30-member Open Working Group to develop a proposal on the SDGs
    • The negotiation process on the post-2015 development agenda culminated in the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development with 17 SDGs at its core in September 2015
  • Annual High-level Political Forum on Sustainable Development serves as the central UN platform for the follow-up and review of the SDGs
  • Division for Sustainable Development Goals (DSDG) in the United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs (UNDESA) provides support and capacity-building for the SDGs and related thematic issues
  • UN Secretary General presents an annual SDG Progress report, developed in cooperation with the UN System, based on the global indicator framework and data produced by national statistical systems
  • Global Sustainable Development Report is produced once every four years to inform the quadrennial SDG review deliberations at the General Assembly, written by an Independent Group of Scientists appointed by the Secretary-General
  • UN Sustainable Development Goals are a universal call to action that unites 193 countries around the world
  • If these global goals are fulfilled by 2030, life on Earth will be better for everyone
  • Goals include:
    • Eliminating poverty in all its forms
    • Ensuring no hunger and everyone has safe, nutritious, and sufficient food
    • Providing equal access to healthcare for well-being and a healthy life
    • Ensuring equal access to quality education
    • Achieving gender equality where women and girls have the same opportunities as men and boys
  • Achieving these goals will result in each member of society being equal, safe, and happy
  • Other goals include:
    • Access to safe drinking water and sanitation
    • Access to clean energy that is safe for people and the environment
    • Sustainable and stable economic growth with decent jobs, strong infrastructure, and support for innovations
    • Lowering inequality within and among countries, cities, and settlements without damaging the environment and people
  • Achieving these goals will result in the well-being of people and the planet
  • Additional goals for taking care of the environment include:
    • Sustainable and safe production and consumption of products
    • Urgent measures to reduce climate change and its impact
    • Ensuring the sustainable use and protection of ocean and sea resources
    • Restoring and protecting Earth's ecosystems
  • Achieving these goals will lead to a society where strong institutions ensure peace and justice
  • It is important for everyone to be involved and build partnerships for achieving sustainable development goals
  • Individuals should demand the implementation of these goals, take the lead, and share information with friends
  • The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are a list of 17 priorities adopted by the United Nations and its member countries
  • The goal of the SDGs is to eradicate poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all
  • Each goal has specific targets to reach by the year 2030

  • It is important to learn about the SDGs from reliable sources and discuss them with family and friends
  • Taking care of the planet is everyone's responsibility and each individual can make a difference
