  • Bowlby believed attachment was necessary for normal development because it provides a healthy
    Internal working model.
  • A warm, continuous, intimate relationship with mother is therefore important for psychological health
    • "Maternal Deprivation" refers to frequent temporary separation from the mother, disrupting this relationship
    • Results in serious and permanent damage to a child's emotional, social and intellectual development.
    • Effects can include:
    • Low IQ, delinquency, inability to form attachments in the future (due to lack of IWM)
    • Affectionless psychopathy
  • Affectionless psychopaghy is when an individual cannot exhibit caring behaviours, concern or affection for others. They don’t have empathy for others and show little remorse, guilt, shame for their bad actions
