spits and bars

• 1. Longshore drift transports materials along the coastline
  2. changes in shape of coastline
  3. spit grows out into sea
  4. spit is exposed to change in wave direction and wind direction - recurved ends
  5. salt marshes form in sheltered waters behind spits
  6. spits continue to grow and eventually join two pieces of land (bar)
• spits are long stretches of sand/shingle that extend from land - where coastline suddenly changes shape (mouth)
• bars form lagoons (trapped water behind it)
