  • Types of texture:
    • Actual Texture:
    • The "real thing"
    • Can be natural (e.g., apples and pumpkins) or artificial (e.g., relief and impasto paintings)
    • Simulated Texture:
    • A surface character that looks real but is not and said to be simulated
    • Skillfully reproduced in the artist's medium that they are often mistaken for the surfaces of real objects
    • Abstract Texture:
    • Simplified texture
    • Invented Texture:
    • Textures without precedent, they neither simulate nor are they abstracted from reality
    • Purely the imagination of the artist
    • Example: aliens and monsters in sci-fi
