  • Functions of art are classified into six categories:
    • Aesthetic: beauty of a figurative figure/materials
    • Historical: portrayal of past events, heroes, etc.
    • Personal: public display or expression
    • Physical: utilitarian
    • Religious: portrayal of worship to God
    • Social: related to celebration or collective behavior
  • Plato perspective on art:
    • Describes beauty as an imperfect beauty that participates only in the form of beauty in the World of Forms
  • Aristotle perspective on art:
    • Considers art as an aid to philosophy in revealing truth
    • Allows for the experience of pleasure
    • Has the ability to be instructive and teach its audience things about life, making it cognitive
  • Art plays a significant role in communicating the artist's previously experienced emotions to its audience
  • Art for Art's Sake:
    • Artists associated with aestheticism believe that art needs no justification
    • Art does not have to be didactic or political to have social impact
