• causes - tough military dictatorship → the leader batista
• batista → VIP, made all the decisions
• severe lack of freedom → if disagreed with batista → military would come after you + execute you
• batista → friendly with the US. this was good for the US because → it kept cuba on their side
• cuba exported sugar/ sugar canes to the US → US gains profit which made cubans angry + dissatisfied with their government ( they were a poor country and needed the money).
• batista → very corrupt + easily bribed. had links to organised crimes, built a palace for himself instead of providing for his county → this was a big statement
• (batista = anti communist) people who wanted/ were communists = sent to prison or executed.

  → cubans didnt like batista + dissatisfied with the government because of this → cubans decided to revolve with the leadership of fidel castro
• US gave batista free supplies, weapons, planes, soldiers
• the us supported batista's regime so when fidel castro took over, the us became hostile towards him
• after 6 years of fighting, batista loses + flees the country to the dominican republic and then portugal
• cuba → turns communist, the US is angry as they are anti communist and have a communist country 90 miles away → causes tension + threat to the country
• the Cuban Missile Crisis started with the cuban revolution and the Bay of Pigs Incident.
• the US were frustrated as they had a neighbouring country as an enemy & they could easily plan an attack with the help of the USSR, so the US decided to plan an invasion.
