Kenya tourism and development gap

• Tourism contributes to 12% of Kenya’s GDP
• 600,000 people are employed in the tourist industry
• Kenya’s HDI has increased from 0.45 to 0.55 based on tourism and tourist numbers
• There are now 24 national park which are protected areas of land
• Maasai tribes are being forced off their land
• There is a loss of culture in the tribes due to tourism and western culture
• Leakage means that most of the money made from tourism does not go to Kenya but to the HICs who plan the holiday
• Tourism can destroy the environment due to snorkelling, littering and hot air balloons impacting on wildlife’s natural habitat
