The Miasma Theory

• Originated in Ancient Greece and Rome and was incorporated into the Four Humours by Galen.
• Bad air created by bad smells caused disease when inhaled.
• The theory of miasma was replaced by Germ Theory in the 1860's.
• Miasma helped prevent disease even though it was incorrect because it encouraged people to clean the streets and be more hygienic.
