" The curtains of his bd were drawn aside, I tell you, by a hand."
It's not Scrooge trying to put the effort into changing himself - it is the spirit that is making the effort to come and help him. - Scrooge is hidden in a metaphorical box of isolation.
The spirit is coming to break the box Scrooge is hiding himself in - he is trying to come and seek him out.
"It was a strange figure - like a child: yet not so like a child as like an old man"
This ghost could be as innocent as a child but as wise as an old man.
When you're an old man, you can look back on those memories - our past shapes us.
Keep onto your more youthful self in the past.
"It wore a tunic of the purest white ; and round its waist was a bound of a lustrous belt."
Contrasts Marley's chain of bad sins to this ghost's belt of purity.
"Purest white" - symbolises innocence so this ghost may be from heaven - Marley came from hell.
"It held a branch of fresh green holly in its hand; and... had its dress trimmed with summer flower."
"holly" - winter
"flowers" - summer
These two words juxtapose each other to show how you should be good all year round. - ghost is coming in the summer too. (pg7)
