Cards (32)

  • What is the nervous system made up of?
    • Central nervous system (CNS)
    • Peripheral nervous system (PNS)
  • What is the CNS made up of?
The central nervous system (CNS) is made up of the brain and spinal cord.
  • What is the PNS made up of? nerves that connect the CNS with receptors, muscles and glands.
  • What are neruons?
    Nerve cells.
  • What are the three types of neurons in the spinal cord?
Sensory neurons, motor neurons, and interneurons.
  • What neuron is this?
  • What neuron is this?
  • what neuron is this?
  • What do sensory neurons do?

Transmits nerve impluses from receptors to the CNS.
  • What do motor neurons do?
Transmit nerve impluses from CNS to effectors (muscles or glands).
  • What do interneurons do?
Interneurons transmit signals between sensory neurons and motor neurons in the central nervous system.
  • Where is the location of the sensory neurons?
Enters at the back of spinal cord.
  • Where is the interneuron found at?
    Found within the spinal cord.
  • Where is the motor neuron found at?

Exits from the back of spinal cord.
  • What is the autonomic nervous system?

The part of the peripheral nervous system that controls involuntary bodily functions.
  • What are examples of the automonic nervous system?
Stomach, Heart, Sweat glands, digestive track.
  • What is the somatic nervous system?
The somatic nervous system is responsible for voluntary movements
  • What are examples of the somatic nervous system?
    Skeletal muscles
  • What is the sympathetic nervous system?
The part of the autonomic nervous system that prepares the body for fight or flight responses.
  • What is the parasympathetic nervous system?
    Rest and digest.
  • What are the 5 parts of a neuron?
Dendrites, Cell body, Axon, Myelin sheath and Axon terminal.
  • What does A represent in this diagram?
  • What is the function of the cell body in a neuron?
contains the nucleus and other cellular organelles.
  • What is the function of the dendrite in a neuron?
recieve nerve impulses from other neurons and transmit them to the cell body
  • What is function of an axon in a neuron?
Transmits nerve impulses away from the cell body towards the effectors (gland or muscle)
  • What is the function of a myelin sheath in a neuron?
A fatty layer that insulates and protects the axon and speeds up transmission of nerve impulses.
  • What is the function of the axon terminal in a neuron?
Buttons like ends of the axon that contain vesicles that house neurotransmitters.
  • What does B represent in the diagram?
  • What D represent in the diagram?
  • What E represent in this diagram?
  • What does F represent in this diagram?
  • What is a synpse?

    A junction between two neurons.
