  2. light energy absorbed is used to split water molecules, producing oxygen and energy-carrying molecules (ATP and NADPH)
• Light independent reactions

  Occurs in stroma

  1. require ATP and NADPH (produced earlier)
  2. Calvin cycle requires ATP and NADPH to convert carbon dioxide into a three-carbon carbohydrate (GAP)
  3. 2 GAP molecules combine to produce glucose, where the byproduct is oxygen

  2. opening and closing of stomata (affected by light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration, water availability, and temp)
