Role of local councillors

• Local councillors represent the interests of the local community they are elected to serve
• They campaign for the best interests of the whole council area
• Attend civic and community functions
• Hold the council to account for its actions
• Serve on council committees
• Represent their political party on the council if they stood under a party label
• Make representations to other bodies on behalf of their community and the council
• Help decide on council policy
• Hold surgeries in their local areas and deal with issues and problems raised by their constituents
• Serve on community bodies and represent the council on outside bodies
