  • The male reproductive system is responsible for sexual function and urination
  • Mostly located outside of the body
  • External organs include scrotum, penis, testicles
  • Internal organs include vas deferens, prostate, urethra
  • Produces, maintains, and transports sperm and semen
  • Discharges sperm into the female reproductive tract
  • Produces and secretes male sex hormones (e.g. testosterone)
  • Penis is the male organ for sexual intercourse
  • Consists of 3 parts: Root, Body/Shaft, Glans
  • Scrotum is a loose pouch-like sac that hangs behind the penis
  • Holds testicles, many nerves, and blood vessels
  • Testicles (testes) are oval organs about the size of very large olives that lie in the scrotum
  • Secured at either end by a structure called spermatic cord
  • Make the hormone testosterone
  • Testosterone causes boys to develop deeper voices, bigger muscles, body and facial hair, and stimulates sperm production
  • Epididymis is a long, coiled tube that rests on the back of each testicle
  • Carries and stores sperm cells created in the testes
  • Vas deferens transports mature sperm to the urethra in preparation for ejaculation
  • Also known as Ductus Deferens
  • Ejaculatory ducts are formed by the vas deferens joining with the seminal vesicle ducts
  • Urethra carries urine from the bladder to the outside of the body
  • In males, it also expels (ejaculates) semen when orgasm is reached
  • Seminal vesicles make sugar-rich fluid (fructose) that provides sperm with energy and helps with sperm mobility
  • Prostate gland contributes additional fluid to the ejaculate and helps nourish the sperm
  • Bulbourethral gland produces a clear, slippery fluid that empties directly into the urethra
  • This fluid lubricates the urethra and neutralizes acidity due to residual drops of urine
