    He is passive in his actions, yet does observe what happens around him.
  • "I make it a rule of mine, the more it looks like Queer Street, the less I ask."

    Enfield does not let his curiosity overtake him - he doesn't attempt to investigate things that are unusual.
  • "I was coming home from some place at the end of the world, about three o'clock of a black winter morning."

    This shows that he may not be the standard Victorian man with strong morals that he presents himself as - this leaves the reader wondering where he had been and what he was doing.
  • "I am ashamed of my long tongue."

    Enfield is a huge gossip, he cannot resist the urge to share knowledge he learns about others, however, he wishes he wasn't like this. He wishes that he was able to keep things to himself and not share private knowledge about other people.
  • "But Mr Enfield only nodded his head very seriously, and walked on once more in silence."

    This shows how Enfield listens to Utterson as an authority figure, he listens to him and fully trusts him in what he says, shows that his character is trustworthy and that he does not need to be the leader - he is able to follow others.
