Duality

Cards (6)

  • "I had gone to bed Henry Jekyll, I had awakened Edward Hyde"

The word choice of "awakened" shows a deeper association between the two and implies a sense of fluidity between them.
  • "This too, was myself"

Jekyll is aware of the fact that there is duality within human nature - he sees the fact that Hyde is a part of himself.
  • "Man is not truly one, but two."

Repetition of "truly" emphasises this statement - the theme of duality is highlighted here as it becomes evident that we all have a good side and a bad side.
  • "All human beings, as we meet them, are commingled out of good and evil"

Human nature is not only one, but two. Here, Jekyll is reflecting on his experiment and condemning the existence of Hyde as inhuman.
  • "Duality of purpose."

As an upperclassman, Jekyll struggles to keep up with his duties in society while also being a member of the working class and thus having different duties."
  • "An air of invitation." vs. "Sinister block of building."

These quotes show the duality of London, as on one hand it appears welcoming and full of opportunity, however, it can also be an unnerving and frightening place - emphasises the idea of duality as it is not only apparent in man, but in everything in our lives.
